Il giocatore deve guidare una creatura sferica di colore giallo, chiamata Pac-Man, facendole mangiare tutti i numerosi puntini disseminati ordinatamente all'interno del labirinto e, nel far questo, deve evitare di farsi toccare da quattro fantasmi, pena la perdita immediata di una delle vite a disposizione. Per facilitare il compito al giocatore sono presenti, presso gli angoli dello schermo di gioco, quattro "pillole" speciali ("power pills") che rovesciano la situazione rendendo vulnerabili i fantasmi, che diventano blu e, per 10 secondi esatti, invertono la loro marcia; per guadagnare punti, è possibile in questa fase andare a caccia degli stessi fantasmi, per mangiarli.

Una volta fagocitati, però, questi tornano alla base (il rettangolo al centro dello schermo) sotto forma di un paio di occhi, per rigenerarsi e attaccare di nuovo Pac-Man. Completato un labirinto attraverso la fagocitazione di tutti i puntini, Pac-Man passa a quello successivo, identico nella struttura; le varie fasi sono intervallate da scenette umoristiche che vedono protagonisti Pac-Man e il fantasma Akabei (noto anche come Blinky). How to Play Pacman

The player must guide a spherical yellow creature, called Pac-Man, making it eat all the numerous dots neatly scattered within the maze and, in doing so, must avoid being touched by four ghosts, on pain of immediately losing a of lives available. To facilitate the player's task, at the corners of the game screen, there are four special "power pills" which reverse the situation making the ghosts vulnerable, which turn blue and, for exactly 10 seconds, reverse their gear; to earn points, it is possible in this phase to go hunting for the same ghosts, to eat them.

Once engulfed, however, these return to the base (the rectangle in the center of the screen) in the form of a pair of eyes, to regenerate and attack Pac-Man again. Completed a maze by engulfing all the dots, Pac-Man moves on to the next one, identical in structure; the various stages are interspersed with humorous skits starring Pac-Man and the ghost Akabei (also known as Blinky).
